THE CRAFTSMANSHIP OF HEMMERLE – GEMOLOGUE by Liza Urla

We all love the sparkle and lustre of a beautiful jewel, but have you ever wondered how each piece is created from start to finish? GEMOLOGUE is bringing you the craftsmanship series aiming to educate and give you an appreciation of the process and how a spectacular jewel comes to life. While other sectors of industry are losing manual skills to automation, jewellery-making stands true its ancestry. I particularly love brands that invest in age-old jewellery-making workshops, conserving traditional techniques and perfecting new ones. THE CRAFTSMANSHIP OF… series will feature design elements, craftsmanship and the labour of love behind every jewel.

Discover THE CRAFTSMANSHIP OF…  Hemmerle and how these bronze and gold earrings with tourmalines came to life!

HEMMERLE

Spanning a rich 127-year history, the German luxury jewelry brand House of Hemmerle was on my workshop bucket list for the longest time and finally my dream came true! Run by the 4th family generation, Hemmerle is a name to know in the jewellery world, systematically chipping away at the conventions of haute joaillerie to create unique works of jewellery art. I was lucky enough to step into their workshop and see their materials and techniques, which have been around for decades and yet are constantly improved and redefined. To me Hemmerle is a mixture of creativity and expertise with a very distinct aesthetic. Read on to discover why!

INSPIRATION BEHIND THE JEWEL

The House of Hemmerle has always been a family affair where creative effort is a collaborative inspiration process. Every team member of this 4th family generation plays a crucial part. In the best traditions of democracy, a unanimous agreement is needed for a jewel to surpass the idea stage and see the light of the workshop.

“With these earrings our inspirations are nails… We have always loved juxtapositions in design, in colours and materials. Our inspiration is the idea of how can something as industrial and heavy as a nail create a floating atmosphere and make an earring appear very light, very airy and very attractive” – Christian Hemmerle

DESIGN PROCESS

To the delight of the gemologist in me, the creative process at Hemmerle atelier always starts with the gemstones! They inspire the colour scheme of the future piece and as the House of Hemmerle stands for using unusual materials, metals like bronze have become the signature, offering the perfect shade to match the stones.

“We loved the brown colours of tourmalines, so we decided to create earrings with bronze because the colour of bronze is very fitting to the colour of gems” – Christian Hemmerle

Starting with the drawing, the design process of the Hemmerle jewelry is a journey of continuous communication. The workshop was deliberately designed with a space for exchanging thoughts, and the possibilities of bringing the design idea and drawing of the jewel to life are thoroughly discussed. Prototype building starts at a very early stage, surpassing the need for technical 3D sketches of the future jewel.

“As we are making prototypes all the way, it is always a trial & error process, which is quite unique… And it is the beauty of it!” – Christian Hemmerle

CRAFTSMANSHIP

Floating gemstones – This is one of my most favourite settings and one of the most complicated to achieve perfection. These Hemmerle earrings are designed to create the impression that the tourmalines are floating in the air held solely by the pointy bronze nails. It is the craftsmanship beyond one’s imagination, where every millimetre is thought through in order to avoid earrings creating a heavy look on the ears. The nails pass through the opening in the hoop and hold the gemstone from the side. Did I mention all of Hemmerle’s creations are one-of-a-kind?

The ‘complement vision’ – Following the principles of Bauhaus design, the House of Hemmerle expands the visual vocabulary of their jewels by experimenting with materials and colours in a way that could be considered avant-garde by some jewellery connoisseurs, but not by me! I keep falling in love with the German contemporary jewelry of Hemmerle and their innovative approach to working with colour, which has already become a signature:

“We use metals that complement the colour schemes, stones and the overall vision of each creation. Compared to simple white gold or rose gold, which have limitations, setting in bronze and patinated copper enables a richer colour palette to play with” – Christian Hemmerle

GEMSTONES & GOLD

To my sheer delight, most of the gemstones used in iconic Hemmerle jewellery are antique, found in the old jewels and given a new home. These beautiful brown tourmalines as well as other gemstones are recut by hand by a trusted partner in Germany, making the gems come to life in a very warm, human and non-computed approach.

Being in the regaining industry, gold used in Hemmerle jewellery is melted and reused. These earrings will have the Hemmerle workshop-made gold attached at the back for stability. Since the bronze makes up for the majority of the jewel, it needs to be of impeccable quality and is industrially produced in a vacuum to avoid any air holes in the metal.

CRAFTSMEN

To my surprise, these earrings were entirely crafted by one craftsman! The Hemmerle workshop revolves around two important jobs: goldsmithing and setting. One goldsmith is dedicated to working on a jewel from start to finish, then the gemstone setter gets involved.

The people making the Hemmerle design come to life are skilled craftsmen, who have first undergone a 3.5-year apprenticeship program and dedicated 5-6 more years to working at the workshop to become master craftsmen. Yet, one of the secrets of the workshop magic of Hemmerle is that they never stop developing new techniques and ways. Even the craftsmen, who have been working at Hemmerle for 30 years, still learn and perfect every single day.

Yellow Gold comfort fit band

18kt Custom Made, Textured, Super Heavy Comfort Fit Band, 3.75 mm deep.

Not all wedding bands are created equal. In fact, there are bands out there parading as wedding bands that are a joke. They look like a wedding band and seem like one, till they bend and crack from the stress of daily wear. For lasting value, don’t just “pick one.”

Chose a quality, comfortable band that’ll be like a little friend, not an annoying “thing.” Two rings may look the same, but trust me, they’re not. Let’s explore the differences and make sure you’re a winner in the wedding band best-choices contest. Read More

#249 Overcoming Anxiety and Taking Calculated Risks with Sarah McAleer

Nothing makes me happier than seeing a jewelry designer move from a place of uncertainty to a place of power.

It happens when you overcome your fears to take calculated risks that move your business into action.

Meet Dr. Sarah McAleer, a jeweler and long-time member of the F&TA community who designs jewelry for strong-minded women and their families.

She’s also our very own Head Coach of the Diamond Insiders!

Sarah faced some pretty intense conflict during the transition into life under COVID-19 restrictions.

Due to fears about her own health and business, she became paralyzed by the shift in normalcy.

This led to a halt in business and productivity on Sarah’s end.

However, this didn’t last long. With community support and a lot of sheer willpower, she was able to overcome her anxieties and make strategic decisions to keep her business surviving and thriving.

I think you’ll be inspired by what she has to say, especially if you’re struggling with some very real fears right now.

Click here to download the show notes

Be There For People

Sarah began to snap out of her paralysis when she realized her family, her customers, and her Diamond Insiders were all counting on her. This became a source of inspiration.

Now is not the time to disconnect. There are people in your family, your business, and your community who are all relying on you in some way or another.

Be there for the people in your life, and allow them to be there for you.

This means you probably can’t just bring everything to a grinding halt – instead, you have to act.

Don’t Discount Your Responsibilities

As Sarah was working to actively shift into a growth-based mindset, she found comfort in her regular routines.

Just running the numbers in her biz, like she normally does, reminded her that things aren’t actually that different. With the right strategy, all these problems are solvable.

I know it’s a challenging time, and it can be tempting to hide from your day-to-day responsibilities.

But I think you might be surprised by how much better you feel when you step back, assess the situation, and follow-through.

Do What You Need To Do

Before physical distancing was in place, Sarah traveled to a community studio multiple days a week to make jewelry.

With access to tools cut off, she had to make a tough decision: should she stop all production and wait it out, or put down the investment and buy the tools she needs to keep her business running?

Sarah’s been in the industry for almost 30 years – she knew what needed to be done. She took the calculated risk and outfitted her home with a last-minute jewelry studio.

Since then, she’s been able to fulfill orders and keep sales flowing. As she says, it’s not about just surviving – it’s about surviving and thriving.

Listen to the full episode above to hear more of Sarah’s inspiring journey in overcoming fear.

Until next week, m’dear!

xo, Tracy

Is this the end of the most famous watch and jewelry show in the world. BASELWORLD sees Rolex, Patek Philippe, Chanel, Chopard and Tudor leaving to create their own event.

Is this end for BASELWORLD

This morning, on the 14th April, Rolex, Patek Philippe, Chanel, and Tudor have announced to leave Baselworld.

This prestigious brands, for many, the reason to come to Baselworld in the first place, have decided to create a new watch trade show in Geneva and collaboration with the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie.

NEW SHOW

The new show will be held in April 2021 at Palexpo at the same time as Watches & Wonders. It is thus creating a unique opportunity for buyers all over the world. The new event aims specifically at retailers, press, and of course, VIP customers.

BASELWORLD UNABLE TO MEET NEEDS OF BRANDS AND VISITORS

Baselworld has suffered a severe decline in loyalty. For many years, this was the fair to visit. This was where it was all happening! I remember how halls and halls were filled with every possible kind of jewelry and watches. It felt a little like a fairytale event. Incredibly expensive to visit. Extremely expensive to exhibit but worthwhile as one could find everything here.

Many exhibitors and press people agreed that over the years, the arrogancy of the show became an increasing source of annoyance.
That and Basel being unable to offer a pleasant, affordable stayover for the duration of the show for anyone who isn’t a millionaire-did the rest.
Brands left the show. When Swatch, with all its brands, turned away from the show, many predicted that others would follow soon.

When it comes to jewelry, this show has lost its importance to VicenzaOro and Inhorgenta in Europe years ago.

So what is the mission of the brands now leaving the show?

The aim is to offer partner brands the best possible professional platform, applying a shared vision to meet future challenges in the watchmaking industry successfully. This departure follows a number of unilateral decisions made without consultation by Baselworld management, including the postponement of the watch show until January 2021, as well as its inability to meet the brands’ needs and expectations. (Source Geneva News)

IS THERE A POSSIBILITY TO SAVE THE SHOW?

Baselworld certainly may have a future. It needs to reinvent itself entirely and np longer stay in their ivory tower. Growth comes from failure. Growth comes from accepting the lesson that a crisis offers and learning from it. Growth comes from coming down high horses and sit down with as many consumers of the show possible. Talk with potential visitors, bloggers, vloggers, journalists. Talk with the retailers and exhibitors. Listen. Do NOT listen to your fans. They won’t teach you anything. But listen to all those who care, but have felt betrayed over the years by the experience offered by Baselworld.

WHAT DOES PATEK PHILIPPE SAY ABOUT LEAVING BASELWORLD:

Source: Geneva News
Thierry Stern, President, Patek Philippe said: “The decision to leave Baselworld was not an easy one to take for me, is the fourth generation of the Stern family to participate to this fabulous yearly event. But life evolves constantly, things change and people change as well, whether it is at the level of those responsible for the watch fair organization, the brands or the clients. We continuously have to adapt ourselves, question what we do since what was right yesterday may not necessarily be valid today! Today Patek Philippe is not in line with Baselworld’s vision anymore. There have been too many discussions and unsolved problems, trust is no longer present.

We need to answer the legitimate needs of our retailers, the clients, and the press from around the world. They have to be able to discover the new models from Swiss watchmakers each year, at one time, in one place, and this in the most professional manner possible. That is why, following several discussions with Rolex and in agreement with other participating brands, we have decided to create, all together, a unique event in Geneva, representative of our savoir-faire”.

What does Rolex say about leaving Baselworld?

Jean-Frédéric Dufour, Chief Executive Officer, Rolex SA, and Board Member, Tudor, said: “We have taken part in Baselworld since 1939.

Unfortunately, given the way the event has evolved and the recent decisions made by MCH Group, and in spite of the great attachment we had to this watch show, we have decided to withdraw. Following discussions initiated by Rolex, it seemed only natural to create a new event with partners that share our vision and our endless, unwavering support for the Swiss watchmaking sector.
This will allow us to present our new watches in line with our needs and expectations, to join forces, and better defend the interests of the industry.”

What does chanel say about leaving Baselworld?

Frédéric Grangier, CEO of Chanel Watches & Fine Jewellery, said: “Like its partners, CHANEL shares the same independence and the same desire to protect and promote the values, know-how, utmost quality and precision of Swiss Watchmaking.

This initiative marks a key milestone in the history of CHANEL Watchmaking and is part of a long-term strategy, which began with the launch of this activity in 1987. This exhibition will allow us to present all of our new creations in an environment that meets our high-quality standards.”

What does chopard say about leaving baselworld?

Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, Co-President Chopard et Cie SA, said: “Chopard first exhibited at the Basel fair in 1964 with a stand of some 25 square meters.

After careful consideration, our family decided to support the Rolex initiative and retire from Baselworld – a painful decision. The creation of this new watch show in Geneva, in parallel to Watches & Wonders, will allow us to serve our watchmaking partners and our customers better”.

Jérôme Lambert, on behalf of the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie Council, said: “The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie is delighted to welcome a new salon which will strengthen the historical Watch & Wonders event in Geneva next year in early April.”

Further information will be published at a later date, in particular concerning the name of the new watch fair and its organization.

Thanks to Geneva News for the actual information and to Pedro Perez Fernandes of the Gruppo Duplex for informing me.

BEST AQUAMARINE MARCH BIRTHSTONE JEWELLERY

Which month were you born in? How fascinating it is to have each one represented by a specific gemstone! March belongs to bloodstone and aquamarine. During the AQUAMARINE MONTH starting today I would like to bring your attention to my curation of March birthstone aquamarine jewellery.

The March birthstone gemstones adorning those gorgeous earrings evoke serene visions of crystal-clear water and sparkling horizons of the seaside. Ilgiz Fazulzyanov gaining inspiration from the opulent forms of Art Nouveau and symmetry of Art Deco style creates a beautiful visual narrative.

WHAT COMES TO YOUR MIND WHEN YOU HEAR “AQUAMARINE”?

MARCH BIRTHSTONE FUN FACT: The word is a combination of two Latin words aqua (water) and marina (the sea). Therefore, the aquamarine gemstone owes its name to the beauty of the sea. The 78.33ct Santa Maria oval aquamarine is the focal point of this spectacular Boucheron necklace I discovered during Paris Couture Week.

CAN YOU SPOT WHICH PAIR OF THESE ASSAEL PEARLS EARRINGS I AM WEARING ON THE NEXT PHOTOS?

I feel aquamarine crystal jewellery evokes the tranquility of emerald seas. Wearing the gemstone combined with pearls in form of beautiful earrings brings the sense of harmony to the appearance.

HOW DO AQUAMARINES MAKE YOU FEEL?

I have to admit I have always loved wearing blue jewellery. Greenish blue shades, fresh watery hues… Aquamarine combined with sparkling sapphires, closed in the sculpture-like form of this stunning aquamarine birthstone ring from Lydia Courteille Marie-Antoinette Dark Side collection is a definition of royal opulence. One thing is sure – aquamarine definitely rules this month!

HOW DO YOU STYLE YOUR AQUAMARINE JEWELS?

There is something special about feeling the weight of this beautiful flower-shaped aquamarine statement ring from Arunashi on my finger. Aquamarine jewellery designs can be a perfect accent for your spring wardrobe evoking it the same way as March brings nature back to life.

DO YOU BELIEVE IN THE SUPERPOWERS OF GEMSTONES?

Aquamarine was used by sailors to bring them good luck on the seas and to ensure a safe voyage. I don’t want to tempt fate either. Aquamarine March birthstone jewelry like these stunning earrings designed by Lydia Courteille show that providence can be glamorous!

DID YOU KNOW THAT AQUAMARINE TONES MAY DIFFER?

They range from deep greenish blue to light blue hues. How would you describe the colour of the aquamarine jewellery design in the photo? Let me know in comments! In this multi-shaded bracelet Piaget set 18K gold with the emerald-cut aquamarine 29.20ct, blue sapphires, black opals and diamonds, creating a breathtaking piece called Azzurro Bisazza Manchette.

DO YOU HAVE AN AQUAMARINE JEWEL IN YOUR COLLECTION?

Brazil among other places, such as Mozambique and Pakistan, has been an important spot for aquamarines for March birthstone jewelry. São Paolo-based Carol Kauffman designs push the boundaries of traditional craftsmanship while paying homage to colourful works of nature.

HOW DO YOU FEEL WEARING AQUAMARINE-ADORNED PIECES?

Every gemstone represents certain qualities in our lives. Aquamarine is considered a symbol of youth and health.  Trying on this one-of-a-kind Buccellati jewel was definitely evoking my inner goddess. Adorned with diamonds and the aquamarine gemstone it appeared on a catwalk for Giambattista Valli collaboration with Buccellati. The collection was an interpretation of female charm and our unexpected nature.

SINCE SELF-PURCHASING IS ON THE RISE DOES THIS APPEAL TO YOU WHEN IT COMES TO JEWELLERY?

The first gemstone my Brazilian husband gifted me with was indeed aquamarine. Brazilian state of Minas Gerais for the past two centuries has been an important source of aquamarine. Nature for sure has its ways of creating beauty. No wonder why I find these Azza Fine Jewellery aquamarine-adorned hoops so appealing.

I FEEL THAT AQUAMARINE IS ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST POPULAR AND WELL-KNOWN GEMSTONES. DO YOU AGREE?

Aquamarine gemstones, often free from inclusions and clear as water, symbolise spiritual purity. These magnificent aquamarine March gemstone earrings designed by Lydia Courteille gleam and flicker with an energetic sparkle. The icy blue hoops constructed with 25 rectangular aquamarines put their owner in the spotlight wherever they go.

DO WE HAVE ANY PISCES IN MY GEM SQUAD?

If you were born between 19 February and 20 March aquamarine is also your birthstone and you might be lucky to won some aquamarine March birthstone jewellery! Being the last zodiac sign in the astrological year Pisces are considered to be ruled by elusive fish. The symbol of fish is also a focal point of the work of incredible Wallace Chan. The creation process of the artist draws inspiration from the works of Mother Nature allowing him to create precious objects the world has never seen before. Learn more about Wallace Chan jewellery craftsmanship on GEMOLOGUE.

LET ME KNOW IN COMMENTS WHAT MAKES AQUAMARINE SO SPECIAL TO YOU?

It is worth mentioning that aquamarine belongs to the bigger group of minerals. The beryl family does not only include pale blue gemstones, but also peach toned morganite and greenish blue emerald. The diverse spectrum of aquamarine’s blue tints has been beautifully exposed by Hemmerle aquamarine jewellery designs. During my visit to their atelier in Munich I had an opportunity to try on these extraordinary earrings and learn about Hemmerle craftsmanship.

How Much Does it Cost to Rhodium Plate my Ring?

diamond eternity band, anniversary band and Engagement ring

Hopefully you were informed when you bought that gorgeous white gold ring that it won’t always look as white or as bright as the day you bought it. Your shiny white, brand new ring, is looking that sharp, because its final step of creation was to rhodium plate it.

In my blog post, Rhodium Plating; Like Coloring Your Hair, Only for Jewelry, I describe what rhodium is, a bit about plating, and have before and after rhodium plating pictures, to show you what a dowdy, white gold ring can look like, before and after plating.

Since you want to know the cost of rhodium plating your ring, I’ll give you that and dive into the why on rhodium pricing.

How Much to Rhodium Plate my Ring?

Written bid for a custom jewelry project

A Bid From Your Jeweler

Rhodium plating your ring will cost between $45.00 and $65.00. This will included a thorough cleaning, polishing and hopefully your jeweler will check the tightness of your prongs while they are at it.

What Else is Rhodium Used For?

Double Halo engagement ringRhodium is used as a catalyst. A catalyst is a substance used to alter chemical reaction, without being changed itself. It is used with other items in car’s catalytic converters, to eliminate nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide and/or hydrocarbon emissions from cars. Yay, science. These catalyst metals remove or neutralize targeted pollutants. For details on how it works, check out Platinum Group Metals in Catalytic Converters.

This isn’t its only benefit as a catalyst—it’s also used in many industries to alter chemical bonds. It’s corrosion resistant and very hard, in comparison to other metals.

Why is Rhodium so Expensive?

Rhodium plated white gold wedding setBecause it is used in the automotive industry and we’re making more cars all the time, rhodium is in high demand. It’s actually one of the most expensive metals by weight. As of February 28th 2020, an ounce of rhodium will cost you $12,650.00. For an ounce! In comparison, an ounce of gold is $1590.00. Bit of a difference there.

There are many more gold mines than rhodium mines. Rhodium’s scarcity translates to about 1% of gold’s availability.

Your White Gold Ring Will Need Rhodium Plating as Part of it’s Maintenance Schedule

rhodium plating before and afterWhite gold starts its life as yellow gold and uses white alloy metals, to create the white gold look. It’s still a slightly yellow white, as compared to polished sterling silver. Enter rhodium plating. Problem solved. The only thing is, plating isn’t forever and needs touch ups. Especially for a daily wear ring. For your engagement ring have it done once a year, when you have your ring cleaned and checked over.

Do People Plate Their Platinum Rings?

I have clients with platinum, which dulls up easily, that choose rhodium plating to prolong the shiny look of their rings. Rhodium seems to give the added benefit of resisting scratching. I’m not saying you won’t scratch, but that it takes longer and the plating seems somewhat protective. I like that.

#250 How to Navigate Closures in Your Brick and Mortar Retail Store

In times of financial uncertainty and online-only shopping, jewelry can still thrive.

Merging creative marketing solutions with the adaptation of online retail, independent jewelry designers who once relied on in-store sales are able to both stay afloat financially and nurture customer relationships.

Mallory Shelter, Joyia Jones, and Nicole Gariepy are all great examples of jewelry designers who’ve done just that.

Each designer has had to close down their retail shops during this time of social distancing, but they’ve all come up with creative strategies for staying in business and keeping customers engaged.

It may be a stressful and uncertain time to be an independent business owner, but that doesn’t mean sales have to stop – your business can still grow!

Be clear on your brand voice

In the chaos of moving your entire sales structure online, it’s important to remember to stay in touch with the people who keep the businesses running: your Dream Clients.

Mallory attests to online communication as a way to remind customers that “we’re still here!” especially if you’re honest about what’s going on with your business.

Now is a great time to ask customers for their individual feedback and create a strong dialogue between the client and the brand.

Tighten up your brand messaging and make sure your website is as clean as possible.

Just because the sales format has (temporarily) changed doesn’t mean your core values as a business have!

Everyone wants to help each other out

We’re all in this together.

Though the current sales climate makes it more difficult to attain new customers, we still have our existing communities of fans who want to help us stay in business.

If we’re engaged, honest, and creative through social media, we can maintain these client connections and get even better ideas for improving the virtual retail experience.

Keep things personal

Remember to continue forming unique and meaningful connections.

Using tools like Facebook Live to talk about positivity and connection, Nicole is able to easily keep in touch and check-in with her clients personally.

We can still offer the personalized experiences of the in-store consult, we just have to do them virtually now. Make sure your clients know that you’re able to offer that, and continue to remind them through outreach.

A nice piece of jewelry or a gift hand-picked by a loved one is just the kind of pick-me-up many of us need in a time like this.

Stay positive, keep creating, and keep growing.

xo, Tracy

Make it with Air-Dry Clay by Fay De Winter – Book Review

As a fan of air-drying clay, I was very interested to see what this book had to offer. Basic techniques are quite easy to pick up and are almost instinctive, particularly if you are used to working with pastry or fondant icing, but as far as adding colour and finishes are concerned, I am less sure so I read this book with great curiosity.

As a leading supplier of art and craft books, Search Press know what they are doing. The format is tried and tested in every respect even down to the size of the book. ‘Make it with Air-Dry Clay’ is produced in paperback and comprises of 112 pages measuring 18cm x 23cm. I mention this because it means the book will open and lay flat with ease making it practical to follow instructions when your hands are covered in clay!

Chapter 1 is divided into eight sections covering Tools, Materials and Techniques. Tools and materials are covered in quite a concise fashion, with plenty of photos, hints and tips. You are not overloaded with information and in a matter of minutes you are onto the techniques. These are dealt with, as you would expect, in more detail with step by step instructions accompanied by photographs. Subjects covered include; Pinching, coiling, creating slabs, making and pressing sprigs, surface decoration and sealing. As expected, I found the section on surface decoration fascinating. It includes practical information on surface preparation but also details on stamping, masking, brushing, sponging, impressing and my new absolute favourite, marbling using nail polish…. who knew! What a great way to use up old nail polish and creating fabulous patterns at the same time (I will be trying this imminently so look out for the next article).

Pg. 23 ‘Marbling with nail polish’ from Make it with Air-Dry Clay by Fay De Winter

The remainder of the book is devoted to projects, 20 in total covering a broad range of decorative objects from jewellery to ‘Balloon Barnacles’! (basically, dishes made by moulding clay around a balloon). There are some interesting ideas, most of which would be easily accessible to all and I think that is the overriding feeling I get from this book. Nothing is too complicated and everything is clear and easy to follow so this is perfect for anyone new to clay.

If you fancy making objects for presents or the home you can choose a trinket dish with impressed textures or a miniature mirror with a decorative frame. On the other hand, you may want to try your hand at ceramic brooches or earrings; either way, this is the book for you. Even if the projects are not to your taste, they are great inspiration to kickstart your own ideas. There are even some templates included at the back of the book to get you started so I defy anyone to not be inspired to have a go after reading this.

All in all, ‘Make it with Air-Dry Clay’ provides great basic instruction and inspiration for a series of clay techniques which will ultimately whet your appetite for more.
